United Range Program

a grass bank program of RSA

What is a Grassbank?

A grassbank is a system where ranchers are incentivized to implement practices, typically conservation-based, in exchange for grazing access. Traditionally, that has meant executing conservation work on their own land.

But because many of the ranchers RSA hopes to support may not yet own land, this vision transforms the idea: the incentives will be actions that help set them up for long-term success, as determined by RSA’s board of working ranchers.

More information will be shared in the coming months as RSA finalizes its management plan and opens applications for involvement in the Webb Ranch grassbank initiative.

UNITED RANGE

United Range is RSA’s way of keeping ranch land working and in ranchers’ hands. Land only comes to RSA through gifts from landowners or like-minded groups, and RSA never competes with ranchers to buy land.

The land is shared over time through grazing leases, so more than one rancher can benefit. It’s especially helpful for beginning ranchers, who can get on good grass without the huge upfront cost of buying land.

RSA fully supports ranchers owning land; United Range is simply another option, guided by RSA’s three pillars of ranching, conservation, and communities.
